Traction elevators work by using a motor to turn a sheave (wheel) that moves steel ropes. The ropes are attached to a counterweight, which helps balance the load. As the motor turns the sheave, the ropes pull the elevator up or down, making it smooth and efficient.
The main difference is in the motor. Geared traction elevators have a motor with gears that turn the sheave, while gearless traction elevators do not have gears. Gearless traction elevators are more efficient, quieter, and require less maintenance, making them ideal for high-rise buildings.
Hydraulic elevators are usually less expensive to install, but they are less efficient and have higher operating costs over time. Traction elevators have a higher initial cost but are more energy-efficient, especially for taller buildings, leading to lower operating costs in the long run.
